I’d just finished watching Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb when the idea for this blog struck me. Kubrick’s absurd, satirical take on Cold War nuclear brinkmanship felt eerily relevant, not because we’re on the edge of nuclear war, but because a new kind of existential anxiety has occurred. Artificial intelligence has become the modern spectre, and the public mood echoes that earlier era: alarm, confusion, and a creeping sense of powerlessness.
Yet just as nuclear weapons require strategic thinking, diplomacy, and a shift in mindset, so too does AI. The challenge is not to fear it but to understand it and, where possible, to guide it.
The Shape of a New Anxiety
AI has entered the public domain with extraordinary speed, and the backlash has been equally swift. Concerns about job displacement, surveillance, disinformation, and loss of control have dominated the headlines. Warnings from prominent technologists and academics only heighten this sense of unease. It is easy to imagine that we are hurtling towards a future shaped by forces we barely comprehend.
But the reality is more complex. The bomb was singular, state-controlled and intentionally withheld. Conversely, AI is decentralised, multi-purpose and already embedded in the fabric of our lives. It is being developed in open-source forums, commercial labs and academic institutions. It powers everything from fraud detection to translation tools to medical research.
That is why fear alone will not serve us. Unlike nuclear technology, AI cannot be cordoned off or kept under lock and key. It is already here. The question is how we respond.
Fear vs. Understanding
Much of the apprehension surrounding AI stems from misunderstanding. Popular portrayals of AI often lean towards science fiction: sentient robots, rogue superintelligence or malevolent systems operating beyond human reach. Most AI systems today are narrow, data-driven tools built to perform specific tasks. They excel at identifying patterns and generating outputs based on statistical inference, not consciousness or intent.
Take large language models, for example. These systems can mimic human writing styles and respond to complex queries but do not reason or reflect. They predict the next likely word or phrase based on patterns in the data they were trained on. They are powerful but not magical. Their apparent intelligence is a function of scale and training, not genuine understanding.
This distinction matters. If we mistake complex automation for intelligence, we risk overtrusting fallible systems. If we assume AI systems are neutral, we overlook the values, biases, and decisions embedded in their creation. And if we believe AI is beyond our control, we forfeit our ability to shape its future.
A Security Mindset
In cybersecurity, we are trained to look beyond the surface. We understand that systems are only as secure as their weakest link. We examine attack vectors, assess risk, and think about adversarial behaviour. This mindset is ideally suited to the challenges posed by AI.
Already, AI is transforming how we detect, prevent and respond to threats. Behavioural analysis, anomaly detection and automated response systems are increasingly driven by machine learning. These tools help defenders make sense of vast and noisy data, prioritise incidents and reduce response times. AI is not optional in a threat landscape defined by scale and speed. It is essential.
But it also raises new challenges. Threat actors use generative tools to craft more convincing phishing emails, clone voices, or automate reconnaissance. Deepfakes, misinformation and automated social engineering attacks blur the line between reality and deception.
This dual-use nature is not new to cybersecurity. Many tools and techniques have both defensive and offensive potential. The key is how we govern their use, monitor their impact, and design robust systems under pressure.
From Compliance to Leadership
Too often, conversations about AI governance revolve around what not to do: Don’t collect this data, don’t automate that process, don’t trust that output. These restrictions are necessary, but they are only part of the picture. The real opportunity lies in setting positive examples.
That means designing AI systems that are transparent, auditable and accountable. It means developing shared standards for explainability, fairness and security. It means creating oversight structures that reflect both technical complexity and societal impact.
The recent Paris AI Summit and the UK 2023 AI Safety Summit were steps in this direction. Bringing together governments, academics, and companies, they focused on foundational model risks, evaluation frameworks, and international cooperation. The tone was constructive rather than alarmist. There was recognition that no single country, company, or community could tackle this alone.
Security professionals can play a leading role here. We already work across disciplines, balance risk, and enable innovation under constraint. We understand how to embed safeguards without stifling progress. AI governance is not a legal exercise or a data science problem alone. It is a systems challenge that demands lived experience.
Keeping Humans in the Loop
One of the most persistent fears around AI is the loss of human agency: the idea that decisions will be outsourced to systems we cannot question, contest, or override. This concern is not unfounded. There are real-world examples of algorithmic systems making harmful decisions in policing, healthcare, and finance.
The solution is not to avoid AI but to integrate it thoughtfully. Human-in-the-loop design should be a baseline requirement in high-stakes domains. Decision support, not decision replacement, should be the goal. Where full automation is justified, it should come with oversight, logging, and the ability to intervene. The real danger is not that AI becomes smarter than us. It is that we become complacent, stop asking why a system behaves the way it does, ignore edge cases, outliers, and unintended consequences, and treat automation as an inevitability rather than a choice.
Technology shapes behaviour, but it also reflects it. AI systems mirror our assumptions, priorities, and blind spots. Embracing AI does not mean trusting it unquestioningly. It means taking ownership of its impact and responsibility for its use.
A Better Analogy
When we look back at the nuclear era, what stands out is not just the destructive power of the bomb but the frameworks built around it: deterrence, non-proliferation treaties, verification mechanisms, and diplomatic channels. These did not eliminate risk, but they managed it. They created a shared understanding and mutual restraint.
AI is different in form but not in principle. We are once again dealing with a transformative capability. We need new forms of governance adapted to speed, scale, and complexity. We need visibility into how systems are built, tested, and deployed. We also need cooperation between sectors, countries, and institutions. The AI race is not like the arms race. It is not zero-sum. It is not a winner-takes-all situation. If anything, the most significant risks come not from adversaries gaining advantage but from poorly designed systems gaining influence without sufficient scrutiny.
We now have an opportunity to shape AI’s trajectory while it is still flexible, establish norms, standards, and safeguards before crises emerge, and steer rather than react.
Reclaiming the Narrative
There is a reason why so many AI discussions descend into doom scenarios. Fear is compelling. It gets attention. But it also narrows the imagination. It shifts focus from what is possible to what might go wrong. It encourages paralysis instead of preparation. The cybersecurity field has long lived with uncertainty. We know that perfection is impossible, but resilience is not. We build layered defences, assume breaches, and prepare for the unexpected. That mindset can help reframe the AI conversation.
Rather than fearing AI, we should demand better AI. Smarter, safer, more accountable systems that serve human goals and reflect societal values. Rather than talking only about risks, we should highlight responsible use cases, open tools, and effective governance models. We should challenge assumptions and explore alternatives rather than accept a narrative of inevitability.
This is not naive optimism. It is strategic engagement.

Learning to “love” AI does not mean ignoring its risks or exaggerating its virtues. It means moving past paralysis and engaging with clarity. It means shifting from fear to responsibility. It means accepting that we, not technology, are the deciding factor.
Just as Cold War deterrence rested on human judgement, restraint, and cooperation, so too must our approach to AI. We cannot control every outcome, but we can control our posture. We can choose to lead, not react, to question, not defer, and to shape, not fear.
